Last month, My Central Jersey reporter, Marcus Borden, wrote an article about Bomber’s starting kicker, Santana Fonseca, and his journey with Diabetes. Fonseca is a senior who plays both offense and defense and is a Type 1 diabetic. He was diagnosed with this autoimmune disease when he was playing Pop Warner in New York, but the obstacle never stood in the way of him playing the sport that he loves.
“You always have to lose to win. I just wanted to play football since I was 5 years old. So, when I found out I had diabetes I was not going to be denied that opportunity.” — Santana Fonseca
As a diabetic, Santana must track his food intake in order to predict his performance on the field and regulate his blood-sugar level. The staff of the team helps by storing a glucose level testing kit on the athletic trainer’s golf cart during practices and games. Laurie Beagan, the football operations director, also gets alerts on her phone connected to the Libra that are located on Fonseca’s tricep. If his blood sugar is too low, so that she could be alert that his blood-sugar is low, before he may even know.
